The RISE Framework
Relationship Integrated Social-Emotional Learning: a species-agnostic methodology for animal-assisted, social-emotional practice, developed and refined across 17 years and more than 3,500 trained professionals across all Israeli programs. It is now the common core of every OKOYA program.
RISE builds on the social-emotional learning framework defined by CASEL (the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning): self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. RISE develops these same competencies through a structured working relationship with an animal, rather than through classroom instruction alone.
RISE treats the practitioner, the client, and the animal as one co-regulating unit. The animal is not a prop or a motivational reward: it is an active co-regulator whose honest, immediate responses become the raw material of the session.
Because the triangle, not the species, is the working unit, the same methodology currently runs in two applications: with horses, through Beyond Riding Lessons, and with dogs, through RISE with Dogs. It is one method scaling across two applications.
Structure
Predictable session architecture: clear openings, defined roles, firm boundaries. Structure creates the safety inside which a client can afford to try, fail, and try again.
Observation
Continuous reading of both client and animal. The animal's behavior is a real-time signal of the client's internal state, often visible before the client can name it.
Feedback
The animal responds honestly and immediately, without judgment. The practitioner's craft is framing that response so the client can hear it as information, not criticism.
Regulation
Practitioner and animal co-regulate first, lowering arousal in the triangle so the client can find their own regulation. That is the skill the whole method exists to build.
Integration
What happened with the animal is put into words and carried out of the arena, into school, family, and work. A session that stays in the session is a ride, not a lesson.

RISE with Dogs is in development. A Certificate of Approval application to the Colorado Department of Higher Education, Division of Private Occupational Schools (DPOS), is in preparation; the program will not enroll students before approval.
